See Me Devotional - Day 6

Mark 5:25-34 ESV
And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for twelve years, and who had suffered much under many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was no better but rather grew worse. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd and touched his garment. For she said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” And immediately the flow of blood dried up, and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him, immediately turned about in the crowd and said, “Who touched my garments?” And his disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me?’” And he looked around to see who had done it. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came in fear and trembling and fell down before him and told him the whole truth. And he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”

Luke 8:44 ESV
She came up behind him and touched the fringe of his garment, and immediately her discharge of blood ceased.

This woman had “a discharge of blood for twelve years” (Mark 5:25).  Leviticus 15:19-27 refers to this condition and what her place in society might have been like. She would have been set apart and considered unclean. Anything she touched was considered unclean.

Can you imagine being treated as unclean and not touching a spouse, a child, or a grandchild for twelve years? And we thought COVID was bad!

She said, “If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.” What was it about the garment of the Lord that she had such faith to believe it would make her well? Malachi 4:2 says, “But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings.” The word “wings” in this verse can also mean garment.

I believe she knew that if Jesus truly was the Messiah, there would be healing even in his garment! The New International Commentary - New Testament says “She crossed the border of legitimate behavior to gain access to divine power.”

This woman embraced God’s promise. She believed that if the reports were true and Jesus was who he said he was, if she reached out in faith she’d gain access to his divine power to be healed.

Pray and reflect in the Lord’s presence. Bring to the Lord areas in your life that need his divine power. Do you believe the reports? Have you found Jesus to be who he says he is? Take steps today to cross the border of legitimate behavior in order to touch his garment in faith. Reach out in faith, gain access to his divine power!
